Champions League winner Costa passes away

Former Porto captain Jorge Costa has passed away at age 53 after suffering a cardiac arrest at the club's training center. The legendary defender, who captained Porto to their historic 2004 Champions League victory under José Mourinho, leaves behind an extraordinary football legacy.
An Illustrious Playing Career
Costa made 324 appearances for Porto, winning 24 trophies including:
- The 2004 Champions League
- UEFA Cup
- 8 Primeira Liga titles
The academy graduate also earned 50 caps for Portugal and had a loan spell with Charlton Athletic in the 2001-02 Premier League season, making 26 appearances.
Tributes Pour In
José Mourinho, his former manager, emotionally recalled: "If he could speak with me now he would say 'do your press conference, tomorrow play the game mister and win the game - forget about me'. I'm going to try and do my job today and tomorrow, and then I'll cry after."
Former teammate Deco remembered Costa as "the embodiment of Porto's spirit and determination - a legendary captain who inspired us all."
Transition to Management
After retiring in 2006, Costa:
- Managed 16 clubs across 7 countries
- Began his coaching career with Braga
- Most recently served as Porto's director of professional football
This marks the third tragic loss of a former Porto player this summer, following the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva in July.
Porto's official statement honored Costa as "the embodiment of our values: dedication, leadership, passion and an unshakeable spirit of conquest. He left his mark on generations of fans."
