Cunha seals dream £62.5m Man Utd move

Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha has described his £62.5 million transfer to Manchester United as "a dream come true" after completing his move from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 24-year-old's transfer was finalized after United triggered his release clause earlier this month, with the deal contingent upon successful completion of medical examinations and visa approval.

Cunha has committed to a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with an option for an additional 12-month extension. "It's difficult to express what this moment means to me," the Brazilian international stated. "From watching Premier League matches at my grandmother's house in Brazil to now wearing the famous red shirt - this is beyond anything I imagined as a child."

Proven Premier League Performer

Since joining Wolves from Atletico Madrid in 2023, Cunha has established himself as one of the Premier League's most dynamic attackers, netting 31 goals in 76 appearances across all competitions. His versatility and creativity have made him particularly valuable, with 27 of those goals coming in league matches.

Manchester United's Director of Football Jason Wilcox emphasized the importance of the signing: "Securing Matheus was our top priority this summer. His ability to impact games in multiple attacking roles makes him the perfect addition to our squad."

Addressing United's Attacking Woes

The acquisition comes as United seek to revitalize an attack that managed just 44 Premier League goals last season - their lowest tally in the competition's history. Cunha's arrival provides manager Ruben Amorim with a multifaceted solution:

  • Scored 6 goals from outside the box last season (matching Bruno Fernandes' output)
  • Registered 51 shots on target across all competitions
  • Demonstrated versatility across multiple attacking positions

Former England international Fara Williams noted: "United's historic prestige remains a powerful draw. While they may lack Champions League football, players of Cunha's caliber still see them as a destination club."

Tactical Flexibility

Cunha's development at Wolves saw him evolve from a traditional number nine into a more creative attacking midfielder, making him ideally suited to Amorim's preferred 3-4-2-1 system:

  • Excels as both a goalscorer and chance creator
  • Capable of playing across all attacking positions
  • Effective at dropping deep to link play or making penetrating runs

Former Wolves coach Edu Rubio explained: "His dribbling ability and driving runs can dismantle defensive lines. United will benefit from giving him the freedom to rotate across the frontline while maintaining defensive responsibility."

The signing represents a significant coup for United, who fended off interest from Champions League-bound Newcastle United to secure the Brazilian's services.
