The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has officially named Gennaro Gattuso as the new head coach of Italy's national team, following Luciano Spalletti's departure earlier this week.

 

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina expressed confidence in the appointment: Gattuso embodies Italian football - the blue jersey is like a second skin to him. His motivation, professionalism and experience will be crucial as we prepare for upcoming national team commitments.

 

Gravina added: We appreciate his willingness to embrace this challenge with complete dedication, aligning with FIGC's vision for the comprehensive development of Italian football, where the national team plays a central strategic role.

 

Gattuso brings impressive credentials to the role:

  • 73 international caps for Italy (2000-2010)
  • 2006 FIFA World Cup™ champion
  • Former AC Milan player and manager (2017-2019)
  • Coaching experience across five European countries
  •  

The new coach will make his debut in Italy's upcoming World Cup 2026 qualifiers:

  • September 5: Home match against Estonia (Group I)
  • September 8: Away fixture versus Israel

Italy currently trails group leaders Norway by nine points in the qualification standings.
