Watkins, Sesko Top Man Utd's Striker Shortlist

Manchester United have identified Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko as their top striker targets as they consider further reinforcements during the current transfer window.
The club's hierarchy acknowledges the need to offload unwanted players to fund new signings, though this process may take until closer to the September 1 deadline.
Challenges in Pursuing Key Targets
Securing either Watkins or Sesko presents significant obstacles:
- Benjamin Sesko: The 22-year-old Slovenian impressed with 13 goals in 33 Bundesliga appearances last season, attracting interest from Newcastle United as well.
- Ollie Watkins: Villa have stated they're unwilling to sell the England international, though United believe their stance might soften as the deadline approaches. However, the suggested £60m price tag for the 29-year-old (under contract until 2028) is considered excessive.
Current Striker Situation
Rasmus Højlund remains United's first-choice center forward despite a challenging debut season (10 goals in 52 games). While manager Ruben Amorim praised his performance in the recent 2-1 preseason win over West Ham, the £72m signing has yet to score in two preseason appearances.
Summer Transfer Activity
United have already invested nearly £130m in three signings:
- Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo (primarily attacking options who could play centrally)
- Teenage defender Diego Leon
Amorim has expressed a preference for players with Premier League experience, while the club continues to manage its squad:
- Marcus Rashford's recent departure to Barcelona
- Several players (Garnacho, Antony, Sancho, Malacia) omitted from the US tour
The manager has emphasized the club won't sell players below their value and remains open to reintegrating squad members if needed.
